Short Notes By Dr. Okey Anueyiagu at The Society For Art Colloquium Lagos, February. 2020
“Medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for”
This is a famous quote from
John Keating
In the Dead Poet Society.
With this quote Keating was trying to say that although science makes things better, art gives us things to do in this longer life.
For instance Science constructs sturdy and strong houses, Art makes it a cozy and beautiful home. Science builds fast cars, Art gives them sleek bodies, comfort and form. Each is its own world, but together, art and science give us a new universe.
Similar to science, art has experienced an evolution. From the Renaissance when art was mainly realistic, to the Romantic era, and then to the Modern and Impressionism. Art became more Abstract bringing up artists like Andy Warhol and Lucian Freud. Art became the beauty that was in the eyes of the beholder. What may be vague and meaningless to some, may be brilliant to others.
It is important to learn to be open-minded about the art that you can’t understand, and learn to appreciate the art that you enjoy.
I read somewhere that before, good art was only for the rich and powerful, but that today just like technology, art is everywhere. Artists are more accessible. Just like Science feeds the mind, art feeds the Soul and the Spirit.
Please Relax and find a way today, at our Colloquium, to satisfy your Soul’s hunger.
